PRONUNCIATION EXERCISE
Project Origins
Herman Rempel's Mennonite Low German Dictionary, Kjenn
Jie Noch Plautdietsch? has been made freely available in machine-readable
form for many years by him through the MennoLink
organization in the USA. Eugene Reimer of Winnipeg informed me in
December of 2006 that previously there had been a set of audio tapes
with the spoken words from Herman Rempel's dictionary available.
Unfortunately, Mr. Rempel had announced in 2005-January
that he was no longer producing those tapes (
http://listserv.linguistlist.org.) Eugene also suggested
Mr.Rempel might agree to have these made freely available on the internet,
as he had long done for the text of his dictionary. When I contacted
the retired Herman Rempel in Winkler, Manitoba, Canada, he readily agreed
to provide me with audio-cassette copies of these tapes for this purpose.
Eugene Reimer then provided me with digital text of Mr.
Rempel's dictionary and suggested I approach the Mennonite Church Manitoba
for technical assistance in converting the tapes to digital audio files.
Darryl Neustaedter Barg - Associate Director of Media Ministries at
Mennonite Church Manitoba quickly recognised the need and did the necessary
conversions as a service to our community.
